Our Five Minute Friday prompt this week is—TURN. This largely unedited “rough draft” form of writing stretches this perfectionist, in the best of ways. We write for five minutes on a given word. If you’re interested in learning more about 5-Minute Fridays, check out the Five Minute Friday website. Or, click on the link at the bottom of this post. As you read my simpler Friday posts, I hope you’ll join in the conversation!
TURN
A couple of months ago, I was rounding a clover leaf turn to enter the highway. I may have been taking it a little bit fast, but I’d done it at this speed many times before.
All of a sudden, it was like the wheels were slipping . . . I braked and the vehicle began sliding toward the other side of the road, and moving toward tipping over the edge.
I sent out one of those arrow prayers . . . and navigated as carefully as I could with no sudden movements of the steering wheel. I (being a vain thing) wondered what the driver behind me was thinking.
Seriously though, every time I take that turn now? I am driving below the speed limit.
As I considered tonight’s word, I realized there are other life curves I take too fast. And when I do that, I begin to slip across the road and onto the edge. I don’t want to tip over.
I push against God’s timing for my writing journey. I want my boys to be more mature than they actually are.
They are boys, after all. TEEN boys.
I want things to happen at a certain speed.
Basically? I want control.
When I try to speed up God’s timing, I always end up disappointed. Sometimes I end up hurt as I drive myself off the turn lane and into the ditch.
I’m learning I need to be still before the Lord. To trust His timing.
He knows what my publishing journey needs to look like.
He knows the lessons my boys are internalizing that will lead them toward a healthy adulthood. He knows the best timing for everything in my life. Every desire in my heart—if/when it should be fulfilled.
When I take life at God’s speed, I find it much more peaceful. Not always easy, but definitely less stress-filled.
Trusting the Lord to bring about things in my life has been one of the hardest, slowest, most-soul-filling life lessons.
What about you? When have you found yourself taking life’s curves too quickly and what did God teach you? What helps you trust God’s timing in your life?

I’m linking up with Five Minute Friday—Turn
Reminds me of when I lived in the Texas Hill Country, and owned an ancient and enormous pickup with a suspension lift and huge tires. One day I was driving down a residential street that had a light covering of loose gravel, and when I touched the brakes I lost all grip. I was a passenger as the truck rotated 180 degrees, between two rows of parked cars. It was an interesting moment.
Currently I’m not really thinking about trusting His timing as much as I am accepting His will. There are preachers who say my best days are ahead, and I should trust God to open the doors that will take me there; perhaps, but to quote Bob Dylan, it’s Heaven’s door upon which I knock.
Ah, well. I’m achieving my ambition to live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse. Can’t ask much more, yeah?

Oh, Andrew, loose gravel has been my nemesis a few times while driving. I’m so glad the truck didn’t hit any of those cars!
I think accepting God’s will can be the harder thing. It can bring peace, even though this choice seldom alleviates some of the “hard” we deal with. Your perspective resonates with me. God can heal. He doesn’t’ always choose to heal this side of heaven. We will knock on heaven’s door one day. I think you may be more prepared than most for that moment.
Your final paragraph made me grin. Vintage Andrew. 😉 Praying for you, friend.

oh… interesting spin. I like it, you paint a good picture of when we try to rush the things we aught not. Good reminder to me my Lady. 🙂

This is SO good! Seriously… I absolutely visualize where you’re going and I think of so many times I should know better and (hopefully) learn my lesson and procede with caution later!

Misty, thank you for your encouraging words. 🙂 Take this the right way: I’m so sorry you can relate with this post! 😉 May we both grow in our proceeding with caution and God’s guidance. 🙂 Thank you so much for stopping by!

SOOOO MANY times in life God’s timing seemed so slow and I thought my timing seemed better…but the end result was His timing was KING! His timing resulted in the Best for us…for example our Sweet precious Agnes came after YEARS of heartache and infertility and adoption paperwork…and SHE IS SUPREMELY better than anything I imagined in all the years of waiting! I am SO THANKFUL for her and God’s timing that allowed for her to be our perfect child!

Myriah, it sounds like you and I have walked similar paths. I love hearing that God blessed with a sweet wee one. On our infertility journey, I struggled with God mightily over the why’s and the withholding of that desire fulfilled. But, in the end, I wouldn’t trade the journey and all that God taught me about Himself and enduring trials, and I especially wouldn’t trade the two boys He brought into our lives because of His timing and His plan being so different from mine. Thank you so much for stopping by here and sharing a piece of your story!

Such a strong picture you’re putting in my mind – thank you. I hadn’t thought of those turns as cloverleafs for a long time – I grew up in Minnesota, so know them well. We don’t really have them in the UK though.

My hubs was just in the UK for work, and he mentioned there are LOTS of round-abouts there. 🙂 I guess I still think of those sharp 360 degree turns as cloverleafs. 😉 Thanks for sharing a bit of your life-now at my place. 🙂

I could feel myself right there with you on that turn. He does know the best timing for each one of us.

Debbie, Yes, God does know the timing for each aspect of our lives. There’s something freeing in living with that mindset, isn’t there? Thanks for visiting!

As a fellow perfectionist, I love to have that control too. I think that is what perfectionism really boils down to is control. It’s hard to relinquish that control over to Him and to surrender to His timing. We just went though Esther in church, the story of how she saved the Jews. Everything depended on God’s perfect timing and Esther had to not only wait but also have discernment to know when God gave her the green light to carry out His plan. I have been in a holding pattern for over a year now. God keeps telling me to wait. I don’t want to…I am so tired of waiting but I do know that if I try to take over, everything will turn into a perfect mess and if I just wait, He has such a perfect plan for my life, far better than I can ever ask for or even imagine!

Awww, Melissa. You understand. 🙂 That urge to control everything rises up so strong in me sometimes, even after all these years of learning to yield to my Father. It really is a surrendering. Surrendering what I think is best and trusting Him to know what is best. Surrendering what I want in exchange for what He wants for me.
That Esther study sounds like it was amazing. Being on hold is so tough. I’m praying for you tonight as you walk on this journey of yours. Wait! Wait for God to bring about His best for you. You already know it will be perfect for you.
I’m so blessed that you stopped by and shared a bit of your story here.

But trusting God’s timing is sooo hard!! I want it all to go my way! 😉 In all seriousness, thank you for this reminder that I need to slow down, appreciate a more perfect plan than I could ever imagine, and open my hands…

Amen, Annie! Trusting in God is so hard! Slowing down and waiting for God to bring about His good plan is the best thing we can do, even if it feels hard in the short term. Right? May He fill your open hands with much goodness and joy, my friend!

timing. what a great topic to talk about. learning to trust GOD’s timing is often painful isn’t it? once again it is a reminder that the importance of our faith is NOT in how much we have but the One in whom we place it. blessings:)

Martha, don’t you love it when you’re writing an FMF post and God surprises you with some insight? 🙂 God’s spoken to me a lot about trusting His timing over the years. I guess this is a lesson I need to keep learning. I love what you said about faith…the important thing is in Whom we place it. So true! Thanks for sharing here, friend!
