Trust: Looking to God

+Jeanne Takenaka @JeanneTakenaka

I was reading Psalm 37 the other day. I have always loved the first verses of this chapter. This time when I read it, verse three jumped out at me. In the ESV, it says,

“Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness.”

We all hear about trusting in the Lord. We all know we should do it. And, many of us say we do this.

And, we probably do most of the time.

What really captivated me was the second half of this verse.

Dwell in the land…

Back in David’s day, they dwelt in the Promised Land. God had given them their land. He didn’t give them a choice; He simply gave them the best.

Land flowing with milk and honey. With fruit so large it took two men to carry a cluster of grapes on poles.

What does this look like today? I wonder if the land we dwell in is where we are right now. Some of us dwell in difficult places.

Relationships are strained.

Health is declining.

Jobs are stressful.

Kids are rebelling.

Right now, some of us are dwelling in a sweet place, where the sun shines with blessing on our days.

Maybe you just got the job you’ve always dreamed of.

Or a loved one just got great news.

The kids behaved today.

You actually got some time for yourself.

Wherever we are dwelling, we are not there by mistake. I believe God grieves with us in the difficult lands. He rejoices with us in the abundant places.

The question is, where are we putting our faith wherever we are dwelling?

Are we feeding on God’s faithfulness?

When we look to God in the land where we dwell, rather than at our circumstances, we can feed on His faithfulness.

We can gain glimpses of His workings in our lives.

When we look to the world . . .

When we look to our circumstances . . .

We’re going to become hungry. Our situations cannot feed us.

They will not nourish us.

Only when we feed on God’s faithfulness can we be satisfied. It’s only when we choose to look to Him in the midst of our hard that we can live with a measure of peace, even hope.

When we choose to trust God in the midst of hard circumstances we can rest in Him. Life may be in chaos, but our inner selves dwell in peace.

The world can never feed us anything nourishing.

Instead, it feeds us unrealistic expectations of how we should look, how we should walk through our hard . . .

It feeds us false security.

If we put our trust in anything besides God, we will be dropped by those things, sooner or later. If we rely on people—as wonderful as they may be—eventually, they will disappoint us.

But, when we feed on God’s faithfulness,

When we believe He is who He says He is, even when what we see tries to tell us He’s not with us . . .

He doesn’t see us . . .

That’s when we will be strengthened to dwell in our land.

What about you? How do you feed on God’s faithfulness? When have you seen God work in your life in a surprising way?

  1. What a wonderful post, and the pictures are just perfect.

Really too ill to say much but this – I do see God’s hand in keeping me more positive and cheerful than I could manage on my own. I still have my moments, usually a response to ‘baiting’ from people who mean well but don’t think about what they are saying. I feel guided, then, to see things through other eyes, and to understand is the pathway to forgiveness.

    1. Thank you, Andrew, for saying anything at all. Your words—many or few—are an incredible encouragement. You are a master at keeping things real yet positive in your online interactions. I think you’re right. When we can look at peoples’ words beyond the actual words and to the intentions, it does make it easier to forgive when something hurtful is said.

I’m praying for you today, friend.

  2. Jeanne,
I really needed this reminder. The one that says, “Look up. Feed on His faithfulness,” Too often I get caught up in my circumstances and like you pointed out, no nourishment comes from that, only unmet expectations and disappointments. Circumstances may change, but God is ALWAYS faithful. Lovely post!
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    1. Bev, I am trying to break the pattern of getting caught up in circumstances. I am a master at that. Sigh. May we both continue to choose to keep our hearts fixed on God, the One who nourishes and strengthens us. Thankful for you, friend!

  3. I had never really noticed this verse either. I love how feeding on God’s faithfulness reminds us that we need to be intentional about it. He is always faithful but we need to constantly make the choice to trust in that and hold to that whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. It is definitely a choice that strengthens us.

    1. Lesley, I’ve loved this verse for a lot of years, but somehow I missed the “feed on God’s faithfulness” aspect of it. Maybe it lit up for me because I’m reading through the Bible in a different translation right now. 🙂 You’re so right. We must be intentional about trusting God’s faithfulness and not let our circumstances derail us. I’m so thankful for your wisdom shared here. Thank you, friend!

  4. Thank you for these encouraging thoughts, Jeanne. Such a great start to my return to blogging after a long summer break. The part of that verse – “feed on His faithfulness” – just touched my heart in a new way. I think I always focused on the first part of that verse. I am learning this truth more and more: “Only when we feed on God’s faithfulness can we be satisfied.” Amen! Blessings and hugs!

  6. Jeanne, the Gospel is simple when received with an open, contrite heart and so is the Psalm you reference: 1. Trust in the Lord; 2. Do good; 3. Live in the land; 4. allow His faithfulness to feed you and fill you. That doesn’t take rocket science, does it? If I get nothing else, I want this to be imbedded in my spirit. xo

    1. You’re right, Susan. It’s a pretty simple truth, isn’t it? Trust God, do good, dwell in the land, be fed by His faithfulness. I agree. May His truths be embedded in our spirits. 🙂 Thank you so much for stopping by!

Thanks for sharing this little portion of Scripture with us, Jeanne. I take these words and images with me.

Being nurtured in Him. Amen …

  8. Hi Jeanne! Thank you so much for taking time to comment on my blog because that reminded me that I never finished with commenting yesterday. Sigh! 🙂 Between the book info, which you saw, and my kids’ first day of school, I was just swamped!
So it was such a blessing to come read your words here today, and to take such encouragement from them.
“The world can never feed us anything nourishing” – I love that reminder. It’s a great snippet to tuck in my heart for when life pulls me in a lot of different directions. And today, when I feel overwhelmed with so much to do, my best decision may be to pull away for a few minutes and recharge with the Lord. Thank you, Jeanne!

    1. Rebekah, I was happy to visit your place, and I’m so glad I did! I know how those first days of school can go! My youngest went into junior high and my oldest into high school this year. Taking school supplies for them was a little cray-zay. 😉 I hope your kiddos settle into their school routines quickly, and that you get a little time to breathe.

In this season of change and excitement, remember to BREATHE. 😉

  9. Yes, Jeanne. I’ve been slammed with so much today. I didn’t handle the slamming very good this morning. Tears … plus. Just got another slamming this afternoon … but now, I’m going to rest in God. They do … circumstances catch us off guard … and we react in the absolute flesh, at times. Rats. I always get so frustrated at myself when I don’t respond the correct way, lol. Keep learning … one foot forward. Maybe two back. One foot forward. We don’t get too far like that, as the saying goes, lol, but we are learning. ❤

    1. Goodness, I’m behind on responding. So sorry, Shelli. I’m so sorry there’s been so much slamming in your life recently. It’s so hard when that happens. And yes, I’ve reacted in the flesh toooo many times. I guess I’m a continual work in progress as I learn to respond in God’s ways rather than react on my own. May we both continue tp learn to trust our Father and grow in His grace. 🙂

  10. The boundaries have fallen out for me in pleasant places (Psalm 16:6), because God dwells here with me.
