Mail: Receiving Heart Mail

junk-mail

Five Minute Friday prompt this week is—MAIL. This largely unedited “rough draft” form of writing stretches this perfectionist, in the best of ways. I write for five minutes on a given topic. If you’re interested in learning more about 5-Minute Fridays, check out our hostess, Kate Motaung’s site. Or, click on the link at the bottom of this post. As you read my simpler Friday posts, I hope you’ll join in the conversation!

MAIL

When I was a girl, I waited for the clack of the lid of our mailbox (attached to our house). I would watch the postman from our front window, walking away in his blue uniform, and I’d eagerly check the mail.

I rarely received any mail with my name on it, but a girl could always hope, right? There was something about holding a letter, a card, from someone that made my heart leap in warmth. To know someone thought enough of me to write a letter (remember those?), stick it in the mailbox and send it my way.

It just touched my heart in deep places.

These days, I almost dread getting the mail. Most of what comes in is junk mail. There’s general mail I don’t have time to read, and almost nothing personal. I miss those days of finding more personal mail than junk mail in the mailbox.

good-mail

It got me thinking about the mail my heart receives. We do receive mail, you  know. Those messages that speak to our heart one way or another.

Those messages that discourage us, that leave us feeling like we’re lacking in some way? That’s junk mail filling up the spaces in our hearts with nothing of value. Just papers that should be thrown away.

We have to be diligent to check our heart-mail. To see what we’re believing and holding onto as truth. We need to throw away those emotional, mental fliers that hold no value.

Those messages that come in and affirm who we are as people? As children of God? Those are the letters we need to cling to . . . to re-read when we need the reminders of who God created us to be.

Heart in Pages

And God’s word is the best mail we can deliver to our heart. His life-giving words, the messages of affirmation, the love letters He sends just to us . . . those things we should clutch in our fists, spreading them out to re-read whenever our hearts need a boost.

What mail has been delivered to your heart lately?

What about you? What are your memories of mail from your growing up years? What mail has your heart received lately?

  1. Great post, Jeanne! When I was a kid I never waited for the mail, because it was never for me, and didn’t grow into that sense of expectancy. I wish I had.

Can’t say I’ve gotten much heart mail lately. The past few weeks have been a real beasting, and I’m so ill and dizzy I literally walk at about a 15-degree slant to the right (the side the pain’s on). I sure don’t feel like a beloved child of the Most High, but feelings are transitory, and the truth of the situation luckily doesn’t depend thereon.

    1. Andrew, there are seasons when there are no words that can truly comfort and “fix” a situation. I know you’re in one of those now. And I’m praying for you, physically and spiritually. You’re right. Feelings are transitory. That’s why we don’t base huge belief systems and decisions on them, right? Sending a gentle hug, friend.

    1. Christin, I’m so thankful that God’s words are words of life. They can strengthen and uplift our hearts when we’re struggling, can’t they? Thank you so much for visiting!

  2. I like this idea of junk mail to the heart. We need to take it straight to the trash. So hard to do though. Often times it stacks up somewhere in our home and it all gets thrown out in a cleaning sweep. No secret admirer just an enemy like Satan who is elated at sending junk our way. Like the mail, most every day.
    I liked this post !

  3. My little Tabby loves to open the junk mail…she finds the rainbow in all things 🙂

My heart is heavy because of some circumstances around us, and yet, we’re clinging to Christ and His word. Knowing that we’re persevering under pressure and false accusations. This chapter will soon be far behind us…In the #36 spot this week I think.

    1. Your cat must be the Pollyanna of cats, eh Christy? 😉 I’m sorry you’re walking through some hard stuff. Clinging to Jesus is the only way we get through some of it. I’m saying a prayer for you today.

  4. I’ve not thought of heart mail before. What a beautiful analog and quite convicting. I fear my heart receives a lot of junk mail. I am #35 in the fmf list.

  5. I adored getting letters from my cousins when I was a kid. I have tons of letters from Pedro from when were were dating and when I spent our first summer as a married couple away at school. I love the whole ‘heart mail’ idea. So many pieces of junk mail to sort through every day.

    1. I loved getting letters too! I had a pen pal when I was in fourth grade, and LOVED getting those letters! Like you, I have lots and lots of letters from my hubs. We had a long distance relationship through all of our courtship, and phone calls cost lots of money back then. 🙂 I love that I still have his words in written form. May your junk mail become less and less, my friend.

  6. A lovely post, Jeanne. A sweet look back at the joys of receiving ‘real’ mail. I dread that pile of junk and bills, too. Thank you for the reminder that we need to be aware of our heart mail and the messages we file away that might not be true.

    1. Heidi, may we both be aware of and deal with the heart junk mail and get rid of the negative messages that try to be filed away in our hearts. I always appreciate you stopping by!

    1. You’re right, Martha. Positive mail—physical and heart mail—is a light in a crazy, dark world. I hope we can both be givers of good mail to those around us this week!

  8. Junk mail to the heart… what a great perspective. Now I just have to remember that I have the power to “unsubscribe” from that junk mail!

  9. Jeanne,
oh I adore our heart-bond! 🙂 I have almost everything my Mom has written to me saved. Sometimes when she sends me the monthly contribution to our kids’ schooling, she even signs it from “Mommy and Daddy” for nostalgia! That’s unexpected and delightful.
Deep down, I’ll always be their oldest, but their little girl nonetheless. I imagine you have that same feeling too.
    Love,

    1. I love that your mom still signs things that way. 🙂 It sounds like the two of you are very close. And, I’m the oldest too, but my mom is still reminding me about “stuff” from time to time. 🙂 We are both blessed.

  10. Lovely post, Jeanne. Your words and pictures gave me that cozy just-got-mail feeling. I’m thankful for a God who desires to fill us with good things. My favorite mail to receive is when a girlfriend sends a card with a from-the-heart letter inside of it—much like this post. 🙂
    Blessings ~ Wendy
